Roadside inspections by the Pennsylvania State Police and other state agencies between Jan. 1, 2010-June 30, 2010, found that more than 40 percent of the large trucks serving the Marcellus Shale natural gas industry were found to be in violation of Pennsylvania’s motor carrier safety regulations. Those 411 vehicles were removed from service. Nationally, since 2006, the trucking industry averaged only a 23-30 percent out-of-service violation rate.
State police are working with the Marcellus Shale Coalition to host a Transportation Safety Day at the Penn State Conference Center in State College on Tuesday, Oct. 12. The goal of the one-day session will be to better educate carriers and truck drivers supporting the natural gas drilling industry of Pennsylvania’s regulations to improve their safe operating practices.
